What this is and who runs it
The Alberta Energy Rebate is a one-time payment introduced by the Government of Alberta in summer 2026 to help with the cost of groceries, fuel and other everyday essentials. The official page states that eligible Albertans could start applying for $100 through the secure online portal on July 1, 2026.
The rebate replaced the Fuel Tax Relief Program for the period of July 1 to September 30, 2026. The official page states that starting October 1, 2026, the Fuel Tax Relief Program resumes and Alberta will suspend the full provincial fuel tax until the end of the year, saving 13 cents per litre on gasoline and diesel. No application is required for that.
Deadline
The official page states the application period has been extended: submit your application by October 31, 2026. The online portal remains open until October 31, 2026.
Eligibility
According to the official page, to be eligible you must:
- be 18 years of age or older as of July 1, 2026
- be an Alberta resident
- have filed your 2025 tax return
- have a household total income of $225,000 or less
Definition of household
Official definition: a household is a single individual or 2 individuals who are married or in a common-law relationship.
Albertans 18 and over living at the same address but not married or common-law are considered separate households. Official examples include roommates, children over 18, and other adult family members living in the same home.
The official page states each adult will need to apply separately to receive a payment.
Household income calculation
Household income is based on amounts reported on your, and if applicable, your spouse or common-law partner's 2025 tax return with the Canada Revenue Agency. It is the sum of the following for both the individual and their spouse or common-law partner:
- Total income (line 15000)
- minus split pension amounts (line 21000)
- minus tuition expenses (line 32000)
- minus medical expenses for self, spouse/common-law partner or dependent children under 18 (line 33099)
- minus medical expenses for other dependents (line 33199)
Automatic enrolment
The official page states the following are automatically enrolled and do not need to apply:
- People receiving the Alberta Seniors Benefit
- Clients enrolled in Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH), Alberta Disability Assistance Program (ADAP), or Income Support
New clients enrolled in these programs after July 1 will need to apply through the portal.
