First Month in Edmonton: What to Do as a Newcomer

Order of Things

Get your SIN first, then AHCIP, and driver's license can be done at the same time or later. SIN is for work, AHCIP is for health, and a driver's license is a useful ID.

Step 1: Apply for SIN

SIN is a 9-digit number for work, taxes, and benefits. Temporary residents' SIN starts with 9 and expires with their permit; citizens and PRs have a permanent SIN.

How: Apply online via My Service Canada Account (MSCA) or in person at a Service Canada office. Bring passport, PR card or work/study permit, and entry documents. Service Canada no longer issues plastic cards; you'll get a paper confirmation.

Pitfall: Temporary residents must renew SIN before it expires.

Step 2: Apply for AHCIP

AHCIP covers insured health services. New residents must apply after establishing residency in Alberta.

How:

1. Check eligibility.
2. Complete the application form.
3. Gather documents: proof of Alberta residency (driver's license, utility bill, lease, etc.), identity (passport, PR card), and legal status (passport, PR card, work permit).
4. Submit at a participating registry (free). Processing takes up to 5 days; card is mailed.

Pitfall: Incomplete documents cause delays. Ensure you have both residency and identity proofs.

Step 3: Driver's License (Optional)

A driver's license is a common ID. Apply at a registry agent with passport, PR card or permit, and proof of residency. If you have a foreign license, you may need a translation and possibly a road test.

Common Pitfalls

• Missing documents for AHCIP.
• SIN expiring for temporary residents.
• Wrong mailing address for AHCIP card.
