Income Assistance (Disability) Eligibility in Nova Scotia
Income Assistance (IA) in Nova Scotia is administered by the Department of Community Services. It provides financial help for basic needs and special needs when you cannot support yourself or your family. This article is based on the official eligibility page.
Who can apply
You may apply if you:
- live in Nova Scotia
- are 19 or older (sometimes 16-18)
- need financial help for basic needs
- have tried to find work or other income (unless not possible)
If you have a disability
You may be eligible for IA if you need financial support for basic needs. Tell your caseworker about your disability. They may ask your doctor to confirm it. Other supports and programs may also help.
Indigenous persons
- If you live off Reserve, apply like non-Indigenous persons.
- If you live on Reserve, contact your Band for assistance.
Under 19
Ages 16-18 may be eligible if: home is unsafe, conflicts with parents/guardians prevent living at home, or no parent/guardian. Child, Youth & Family Supports must confirm need for protective services. You must agree to attend school or job training and live in supervised housing.
Ongoing eligibility
Your caseworker reviews your situation regularly. Report any changes, eligibility status, and new needs.
Employability assessment
You and your caseworker decide when to do an employability assessment. ESS staff help explore programs. You must participate and create an action plan. The assessment looks at skills, experience, training needs, and barriers.
Other income
Always report any money you receive. Depending on the source, you may still receive IA if eligible.
