Free Options
The CRA states that depending on the year, some software may offer free options if you:
- Have a modest income
- Have a simple tax situation
- Live in certain provinces or territories
- Meet other criteria specified by the provider

The CRA explicitly warns:
- The CRA does not review privacy policies of software developers. You are responsible for researching them.
- The CRA is not responsible for omissions or programming errors affecting calculations.
- Certified software companies are not representatives of the CRA.
- Do not send personal information by email; it is not secure and increases identity theft risk.

Filing for Previous Years
You must use software certified for the tax year you are filing. Currently, you can file for tax years 2018 to 2025. Most providers are also certified for previous years; check each provider's details.
