Allowance: A Benefit for Spouses Aged 60-64

The Allowance is a monthly tax-free benefit for Canadians aged 60-64 with low income whose spouse is eligible for GIS. Learn about eligibility and application timing.

What is the Allowance?

The Allowance is a monthly tax-free benefit from the Government of Canada, administered by Service Canada. It is for people aged 60 to 64 with low income whose spouse or common-law partner is eligible for the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS).

Who is eligible?

According to the official website, you may qualify if:

  • You are 60 to 64 years old;
  • You have low income;
  • Your spouse or common-law partner is eligible for GIS.

You must also meet the eligibility criteria for Old Age Security (OAS) and GIS. The site states: "To qualify for the Allowance, you must also qualify for the GIS and for OAS."

When to apply

Apply 6 to 11 months before you turn 60. If you are already 60 to 64, apply as soon as possible.

Special case: spouse's death

If you are receiving the Allowance and your spouse or common-law partner passes away, you will be automatically converted to the Allowance for the Survivor.

Payment amounts

The site gives an example: if your spouse receives GIS and full OAS, the Allowance can be up to $1,428.06 per month. Actual amounts depend on income; see the official site for details.

How to apply

Apply online through My Service Canada Account (MSCA). The site recommends signing up for Direct Deposit to avoid delays. For updates, call 1-800-277-9914 or visit a Service Canada office.
