Seniors 65+ on Transit in Ontario: Senior Fares and Cards

The TTC offers senior fares for riders 65 and older. This guide summarizes official fare prices, payment methods, eligibility, and where to get a PRESTO card.

What this is and who manages it

In Ontario, senior transit fares are set by each city's transit agency. Most transit in Toronto is operated by the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), which publishes its fare and discount rules on its own website. This article only restates senior fare information published by the TTC.

Senior fare prices

The TTC fare table lists the following single-trip fares for riders 65 and older:

  • Cash: $2.30
  • PRESTO card: $2.25
  • Interac Debit or credit card: $3.30 (same as the adult fare)

The TTC states that tapping an Interac Debit or credit card (including a card in a mobile wallet) charges the adult fare of $3.30. Discounted fares such as Senior, Youth, or Fair Pass are not available with this payment method.

Eligibility and ID for senior discounts

The TTC fares page directs readers to its "Fare types and discounts" page for eligibility and ID requirements for discounted fares. That page is not included in the source material provided here, so the specific documents required and how age is verified are not listed on this page. Check the TTC website at the time of application.

How to pay the senior fare

The TTC lists these payment methods:

  • PRESTO card: physical card or PRESTO in a mobile wallet; tap to pay the $2.25 senior fare.
  • PRESTO Ticket: available at Fare Vending Machines at all subway stations and Line 5 Eglinton and Line 6 Finch West stations, and at Shoppers Drug Mart and participating Customer Service Outlets. One-ride ticket $3.35, two-ride ticket $6.70, day pass $13.50. PRESTO Tickets do not include a senior discount.
  • Cash: exact fare only, no change. Cash fares do not count toward monthly fare capping and do not include a two-hour transfer.
  • Interac Debit or credit card: charged the adult fare; no senior discount.

Monthly fare capping

The TTC states that tapping the same PRESTO card, Interac Debit card, or credit card (including in a mobile wallet) counts toward a monthly cap. Once you reach 47 eligible TTC fares in a calendar month, the rest of your TTC trips that month are free. The cap resets on the first day of each calendar month. Cash, PRESTO Tickets, and paper transfers do not count. The TTC notes that using different cards, devices, or mobile wallets may prevent fares from counting toward the same cap.

Monthly and 12-month passes

The TTC states that most TTC Monthly and 12-Month passes were discontinued on August 31, 2026, including the Adult Monthly Pass, Youth Monthly Pass, Senior Monthly Pass, Fair Pass Monthly Pass, Youth 12-Month Pass, and Senior 12-Month Pass. Still available are the Adult 12-Month Pass ($143.00) and the Post-Secondary Student Monthly Pass ($128.15). Monthly passes are sold from the last 12 days of the current month to the eighth day of the next month.

Where to get a PRESTO card

The TTC lists these purchase channels:

  • Fare Vending Machines in subway stations and Line 5 and Line 6 stations, $4 per card
  • Shoppers Drug Mart or participating Customer Service Outlets
  • Online at prestocard.ca
  • A digital PRESTO card in a mobile wallet, free, for ages 13 and up
  • A limited quantity of free PRESTO cards at select Toronto Public Library branches

Load funds or passes via the PRESTO App, prestocard.ca, Autoload or Autorenew, station Fare Vending Machines, and Shoppers Drug Mart or participating Customer Service Outlets.

Other fares and passes

The TTC's "Other fares and passes" section also lists the Convention Pass, Support Person Assistance Card, and CNIB Transit card. Eligibility details are on the corresponding TTC pages.
