Renting in Manitoba: Deposits and Tenant Rights
The Residential Tenancies Branch (RTB) in Manitoba, under Consumer Protection and Government Services, provides information on rights and responsibilities during a tenancy, investigates problems, and holds hearings to make decisions and issue orders.
Rent Increase Guideline
The official page states: The 2026 rent increase guideline is 1.8%, effective January 1, 2026. This is the guideline for landlords without special permission.
Deposits
The RTB sometimes holds money owed to tenants by landlords, such as security deposits plus interest, rent overpayments, or proceeds from abandoned property sales. These funds are held in trust for two years. If you believe you have money in the RTB trust account, use the link on the official page.
Office Hours and Document Processing
RTB offices are open Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, excluding statutory holidays. Each client is limited to a maximum of two documents processed while you wait per day. Additional documents will be processed in order received, and you will be contacted when ready. Same-day service may not be available during high volumes.
