What happened
The Calgary Fire Department (CFD) has issued a health advisory over smoke from the ongoing fire at the ECCO Recycling landfill in southeast Calgary. The city says smoke conditions have worsened and residents in areas downwind of the fire should take precautions.
Communities listed as affected include Douglasdale, Quarry Park, East Shepard, McKenzie Town, New Brighton, Copperfield and other neighbouring communities.

> The Calgary Fire Department (CFD) is advising residents in areas downwind of the ongoing fire at the ECCO Recycling landfill in southeast Calgary to take precautions as smoke conditions have worsened.
Who is affected
The notice names children, youth, seniors, pregnant women, and people with asthma, heart disease or other underlying health conditions as vulnerable groups. It says they should limit outdoor activities and move indoors if they see or smell smoke. Residents with existing respiratory or cardiovascular conditions should monitor their symptoms, continue taking prescribed medications and follow the advice provided by their healthcare professionals.
People in smoke-affected areas may experience eye, nose and throat irritation, increased mucus production, coughing or headaches, the notice says, and those with such symptoms should reduce their exposure where possible.
Timeline
Alberta Environment and Protected Areas (AB-EPA) has deployed portable and mobile equipment to monitor air quality near the fire since September 9. Air monitoring data is collected and reviewed by Alberta Health Services. The notice says hourly average readings above Alberta's ambient air quality guidelines were identified, and residents directly downwind may still experience smoke and related health effects.
The notice does not state an end date for the advisory.
