Alberta Adult Health Benefit: Coverage for Dental, Glasses, and Drugs

The Alberta Adult Health Benefit provides dental, eye, and prescription drug coverage for low-income adults who are pregnant or have high ongoing drug needs. Learn about eligibility, coverage, and how to apply.

Alberta Adult Health Benefit

The Alberta Adult Health Benefit (AAHB) is a provincial program for low-income households where an adult is pregnant or has high ongoing prescription drug needs. It is administered by the Government of Alberta.

Eligibility

You may qualify if you:

  • Are pregnant
  • Have high ongoing prescription drug needs
  • Are leaving Income Support or AISH due to employment, self-employment, or CPP-D income

You and your family must:

  • Live in Alberta
  • Be Canadian citizens or permanent residents
  • Meet income guidelines (see official table)
  • Not receive health benefits from other government programs (e.g., Income Support, AISH, NIHB, etc.)

Income calculation: Add Line 23600 from your tax return (and spouse's), add support payments received (Line 12799), subtract taxable support payments (Line 12800), subtract annual drug costs. If negative, use zero.

Coverage

  • Dental: basic services (extractions, fillings, dentures) and preventive care (x-rays, exams, cleaning)
  • Eye exams and glasses: adults every 2 years; dependents under 18 annually
  • Prescription drugs: see Interactive Drug Benefit List; some OTC products covered
  • Diabetes supplies: test strips, lancets, etc.; CGM for eligible individuals
  • Ambulance: emergency trips to nearest hospital
  • Essential OTC medications: may be covered

If you have other coverage, use it first; AAHB may cover remaining costs.

How to Apply

  1. Download form AEHB3931
  2. Complete all sections
  3. Sign and date the declaration
  4. Sign consent for CRA income verification
  5. Include proof of drug needs if applicable
  6. Submit by email, mail, or fax

If leaving Income Support or AISH, speak to your case worker.

After Applying

  • Card: mailed to you; show it when receiving services
  • Annual review: every September, income checked; auto-renew if below threshold
  • Change of info: use form AEHB3002
  • Consent to release info: form AAS13391

Income Reassessment

  • Oct 1, 2025 – Feb 28, 2026: if denied, request reassessment based on estimated 2025 income. Provide income verification from Jan 1, 2025, and evidence for rest of 2025.
  • Mar 1 – Sep 30, 2026: if denied, re-apply using 2025 income with CRA Notice of Assessment.

Exception Committee

For non-covered services, submit a request with appropriate forms (e.g., for drugs, optical).
