What is the B.C. family benefit?
The B.C. family benefit is a tax-free monthly payment for families with children under 18. It is administered by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) for the Province and paid together with the Canada Child Benefit (CCB).
Who is eligible?
Families with children under 18 may receive the benefit if they meet eligibility criteria. The CRA determines eligibility based on your tax returns and CCB registration.
How to apply?
- You (and your spouse or common-law partner) must file a T1 Income Tax and Benefit Return.
- If your child is registered for the CCB, they are automatically registered for the B.C. family benefit. No action is required.
- If not registered for CCB, you need to apply for the CCB first.
- If you move to B.C., eligibility is determined after you update your information with CRA.
- If you move out of B.C., notify CRA to avoid overpayment.
Benefit amounts
For the July 2026 to June 2027 benefit period, the maximum annual amounts are:
- $1,750 for the first child
- $1,100 for the second child
- $900 for each additional child
If adjusted family net income for 2025 is less than $30,176, you receive the maximum. If income is between $30,176 and $96,562, you receive at least $775 (first), $750 (second), $725 (additional). If income exceeds $96,562, amounts are reduced by 4% of the portion over $96,562 until zero.
Monthly payment is annual amount divided by 12. Use the federal calculator to estimate.
Single parent supplement
Low-income single parents may receive up to $500 per family annually, if receiving the benefit and not cohabiting as a spouse. The supplement is reduced if income exceeds $30,176.
Relationship with CCB
The B.C. family benefit is paid together with the CCB, but they are separate benefits. Eligibility for B.C. family benefit is tied to CCB registration, but amounts are calculated independently.
Shared custody
If you share custody, you receive half the amount for that child.
