What is CRA My Account?
CRA My Account is the Canada Revenue Agency's (CRA) online portal for individuals to manage their tax and benefit information. It is the main gateway to access services like filing taxes, viewing notices, and updating personal details.
How to Register or Sign In
According to the CRA website, there are two ways to access your account:
- Option 1: Sign in with your existing credential – Choose from:
- CRA user ID and password
- Sign-In Partner (e.g., major bank online banking)
- Provincial partner (BC, AB)
- Option 2: Register for a CRA account – If you don't have an account, you need to register. During registration, you'll be asked to verify your identity and set up credentials.
Important Notes (from official source)
- Acting on behalf of someone else: You must use Represent a Client in your CRA account to access another person's information.
- Shared devices: Do not use autofill for online banking on a shared device. If you accidentally register with someone else's banking credentials and link your SIN, that person will have access to your tax info.
- Forgot credentials: You can recover access by re-registering.
Common Issues and Official Solutions
- Did not receive one-time passcode: Try resending, use a different enrolled phone number, use 'Call me' instead of 'Text me' (especially with VoIP), use passcode grid or authenticator app, or contact CRA.
- Did not receive CRA security code: If lost or not received after 10 business days, use document verification service or contact CRA for a new one by mail. If expired, use document verification or sign in to request a new one.
- Account locked: If your CRA user ID and password are revoked, use a different sign-in option or re-register.
- Change sign-in option: You can switch between CRA ID, Sign-In Partner, or provincial partner.
