How to Find Your Designated School and Register with CBE in Calgary

In Calgary, public schools (Calgary Board of Education, CBE) assign students to a designated school based on home address and chosen program. First, find your school, then contact it to register. Here's how.

Step 1: Find Your Designated School

Go to the CBE website and use the "Find a School" tool (link below). Enter your home address to see which school your child should attend. The tool is an online map that also lets you search school directories, programs, and open houses.

Note: Your designated school may be in your community or nearby, depending on space. If full, you may be placed in a nearby school.

Step 2: What You Need to Register

Contact your designated school directly to ask about registration. Typically, you'll need:

  • Child's birth certificate
  • Proof of address (e.g., lease, utility bill)
  • Guardian's ID (e.g., passport, PR card)
  • Immunization records
  • Any special needs assessments if applicable

Call or email the school first to confirm exactly what they require.

Common Pitfalls

  • Proof of address: CBE requires proof of your home address. New immigrants may not have bills yet; a lease or bank statement in your name works.
  • Program choice: Besides regular programs, CBE offers French immersion, arts, sports, etc. If you choose a special program, it may be at a different school with limited spots.
  • Timing: CBE has registration windows, but new immigrants can register anytime. Contact schools early as popular ones fill up.
  • Language support: If your child is an English learner, the school may assess for ESL, but this doesn't block registration.

Other Useful Info

  • CBE has over 250 schools in seven areas, each with an office for support.
  • Open houses are listed on the CBE website under "Events, Sessions & Open Houses."
  • For questions about school assignment, contact your area office (details on the website).
