What changed
The City of Calgary says about 95 per cent of the new Bearspaw South Feeder Main has been installed across stages A and B. The project is entering its final stages, with work beginning in November to connect the new feeder main to the existing water system.
To complete the connection safely, the existing feeder main will need to be shut down for approximately four weeks. The City says city-wide Stage 4 outdoor water restrictions and voluntary indoor water conservation will be required starting November 4.
Tie-in work will take place at three locations: 33 Avenue and 89 Street N.W.; 33 and 34 Avenues and 83 Street N.W.; and the Shaganappi Pump Station near Edworthy Park. The City says the work will cause significant traffic impacts, including intersection and lane closures, detours, and sidewalk and bicycle lane closures, with some work requiring 24-hour construction.
Separately, starting October 29, additional repairs will be done on another section of the feeder main along Parkdale Boulevard N.W., between the Shaganappi Pump Station and the Memorial Pump Station, at six locations at the same time, expected to be completed in early December.
What the official notice says
> As a result, city-wide Stage 4 outdoor water restrictions and voluntary indoor water conservation will be required beginning November 4 for approximately four weeks.
Who is affected
The restrictions are city-wide and affect all Calgary residents. The official page states that while the feeder main is shut down, every water-saving action will help reduce demand, and asks Calgarians to prepare by not watering outdoors, flushing only when needed, running dishwashers and washing machines with full loads, and taking shorter showers (aiming for three minutes or less). The page also states that everyone is encouraged to help spread the word about the November 4 restrictions by sharing the information with family and friends.
Residents, businesses and property owners along construction routes face traffic and access impacts. The City says it continues to work directly with those affected, and residents experiencing construction-related impacts can visit the Bearspaw South Feeder Main Community Resource Centre at the Bowness Community Association, 7904 43 Ave. N.W.
When it starts
