Alberta Child Health Benefit: Free Dental, Glasses, and Medications

The Alberta Child Health Benefit provides dental, optical, prescription drug, and other health benefits for children in low-income households. Learn about eligibility, income limits, and how to apply.

Alberta Child Health Benefit

The Alberta Child Health Benefit (ACHB) is a provincial program that covers health benefits for children in low-income households. It is for children up to 18 years old, and also for 18- or 19-year-olds living at home and attending high school.

Coverage

  • Dental care: basic and preventative services like fillings, x-rays, examinations, and teeth cleaning
  • Eye glasses: every year
  • Prescription drugs: eligible list at Interactive Drug Benefit List
  • Some over-the-counter products, such as children's vitamins
  • Ambulance services: emergency trips to the nearest hospital
  • Diabetes supplies: injection supplies, testing strips, lancets, and continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) for eligible individuals

If you have other health coverage, use that first; ACHB may cover remaining costs. If eligible for the federal Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), claims must be submitted to CDCP first, then ACHB.

Eligibility

You and your family must:

  • Live in Alberta
  • Be Canadian citizens or permanent residents
  • Meet income guidelines
  • Not receive health benefits from Income Support, AISH, Child and Youth Support Program, or Non-Insured Health benefits for First Nations/Inuit

  • Report any personal information changes using form AEHB3002.
  • To allow third-party communication, use form AAS13391.

Income Reassessment

If denied based on income, you can request reassessment. For denials between Oct 1, 2025 and Feb 28, 2026, apply based on estimated 2025 income with supporting documents. For denials between Mar 1 and Sep 30, 2026, reapply using 2025 income with CRA Notice of Assessment.
